Job Summary

The Direct Support Staff/Staff Development Advocate (DSP/SDA) is responsible to provide exemplary and routine Direct Support. The DSP/SDA maintains and advocates client satisfaction of services with Danville Support Staff through role-modeling and training. The DSP/SDA reports observations from file and onsite audits to their supervisor. This position requires a flexible, full time schedule, performing varying assignments, commuting between programs and assignments which includes overnights and weekends under the supervision of the Staff Development Assistant.

Essential Job Responsibilities

2.      Complete Direct Support job responsibilities as outlined in the Direct Support Job Description.

3.      Assist clients in maintaining a safe and healthy lifestyle, and monitor for changes in their general health, appearance, behavior, and patterns of activities. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist clients in taking their medications per physician orders and Danville protocols.
  • Follow medical management protocols.
  • Follow the emergency plan per program requirements.
  • Follow all health and safety protocols and document appropriately.

4.      Responsible for monitoring and maintaining a clean, safe, and secure environment for clients at all times. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Follow policies regarding sanitary conditions, health and safety.
  • If applicable, ensure snow is removed from sidewalks and driveways.
  • Keep homes clean, neat, in good repair and immediately reporting any inside or outside hazardous or unsafe conditions for repair or resolution.
  • Conduct required evacuation drills, earthquake training and other safety training per Danville procedures.
  • If applicable, complete a bed check per Danville procedures.
  • Take a head count as needed to assure all clients are present during activities, when at home, at work, or in the community, when they are not at work or home and complete the census report.

5.      Provide training and assistance to all clients in making healthy dietary choice and following any pre-established orders by medical professionals. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure there is an adequate food supply.
  • Follow mealtime procedures to include diets and document per doctor’s orders.
  • Ensure clients are supported in cleaning up after meals following Danville procedures.
  • Completing grocery shopping and if appropriate, shop with clients.
  • Make assignments for clean-up and rotate each week
  • Use adaptive equipment appropriately and keep it clean and in good repair.
  • Provide family style dining as appropriate.

6.      Support clients to plan and participate in rewarding, meaningful community and recreational activities, celebrations with friends and families, learning activities, household chores (responsibilities), physical fitness activities and money management. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and participate in meaningful recreational opportunities as appropriate.
  • Celebrate with clients and families as appropriate.
  • Support clients to play an active role in daily household maintenance.
  • Provide instruction, discussion, and role model approved physical fitness activities.
  • Take appropriate actions, including implementing behavioral support plans if clients engage in inappropriate or aggressive behaviors.

7.      Responsible for assisting clients in all personal hygiene tasks for their total care needs. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Follow and document hygiene protocols for clients, which may include but not limited to menses records, assist with or ensure clients complete shaving, brushing teeth, bathing, shampooing and toileting.
  • Following clients’ protocols if there are requirements of special soaps, lotions or shampoos.

8.      Complete paperwork and electronic documentation, as required, to meet Danville, federal, and state regulatory requirements, including, but not limited to:

  • Individual data form
  • Health tracking
  • General event reports
  • Client census
  • Secure communications
  • Annual assessment
  • Incident reports
  • Behavior data
  • Medical records
  • Daily data
  • Personal hygiene
  • Financial transactions
  • Monthly census

9.      Maintain and expand skills and knowledge relevant to providing high quality support and services to clients.  Successfully complete required pre-service and on-going training requirements within Danville and state required timeframes and meet region-required competency levels.  Training that needs to be completed may include, but is not limited to:

  • New Hire Orientation
  • Staff meetings
  • 3/6 month training 
  • Re-certifications
  • Additional training per year as required or as scheduled

10.  Have flexibility with respect to hours of work and changing conditions.  Report to work on time, and if unable to report to work, or if there is a need to come to work late or leave early, follow Danville’s approval protocols.  Requirements may include, but are not limited to:

  • Notify your supervisor by telephone (not voicemail or text message) when you first anticipate not being able to work.  
  • Or, notify your supervisor by telephone no less than 2 hours prior to the start of shift if you are going to be unable to work or are going to be late.
  • Get prior approval before leaving early from your regularly scheduled shift.
  • Complete time records accurately and submit them on time with documentation, if required.  

 

Additional Job Responsibilities

This position will also include:

  • Role-model accurate medication administration and observation
  • Role-model effective weekly planning and observation
  • Role-model active treatment and observation 
  • Client transport (safely transport clients to and from outings, work, personal appointments)
  • Ensure vehicles are maintained according to Danville’s vehicles policies. 

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Following all state, and local laws, and Danville’s vehicle policies.
  • Never leave clients unattended in vehicles.
  • Turn off engine and take keys when leaving vehicles.
  • Keep radios at a level that allows driver and passengers to hear someone talking or emergency signals or sirens.

Minimum Qualifications 

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred, unless required by state law
  • 1 year working in human services, preferably with adults or children with disabilities

Additional Requirements

  • Required to pass a criminal background investigation upon hire and at least every 5 years.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must have a valid Nevada’s driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Must have routine access to personal transportation meeting requirements as outlined on the Semi-Annual Driving Review which includes current Nevada insurance and registration.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Basic fluency in oral and written English
  • For safety and continuity of care, must be able to effectively communicate with other employees and clients.  
  • Basic keyboarding and computer skills

Special Skills/Training/Certifications

  • CPR/First Aid certification, SOAR training and MAT certification, preferred

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

 1.      Physical Requirements:

  • Repetitive manual and finger dexterity and eye- hand coordination.
  • Ability to use all office equipment.
  • Lift/carry up to 50 pounds. 
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, sit and walk for periods of time.
  • Must be able to utilize proper body mechanics while assisting with the transfer of individuals weighing up to 250 pounds utilizing manual or mechanical lifting devices.
  • Perform life-saving techniques, e.g. CPR.
  • Will be required to drive personal vehicles and company vehicles to include passenger vans.

 2.      Visual, hearing, and communication requirements:

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to give and receive verbal and written instructions in English.

 3.      Work location:

  • Home-like and office settings with varying degrees of background noise.
  • The possibility of exposure to blood borne pathogens exists if universal precautions are not followed.
  • May require working under stressful conditions, and handling emergencies.
  • There will be pressure at times to meet scheduled appointments and deadlines and manage crisis situations.
  • This position will interact with clients who are intellectually and developmentally disabled and may be frail or confused and have the potential for verbal or physical aggression.
